Oncology and Infusion Nurse
Job Summary
The Oncology & Infusion Services Registered Nurse provides safe, high-quality nursing care to patients receiving outpatient infusion therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, specialty infusions, and supportive care treatments. This position is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care while promoting patient safety, comfort, education, and positive outcomes.
The nurse works closely with oncologists, providers, pharmacy staff, laboratory personnel, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated care and adherence to treatment plans. Key responsibilities include administering oncology and infusion therapies, monitoring for complications, educating patients and families, coordinating services, and following regulatory, safety, and infection prevention standards. The Oncology & Infusion Services Nurse must exercise sound clinical judgment, communicate effectively, and work independently in both outpatient clinic and infusion center settings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist oncologists and providers during virtual and in-person patient visits by performing assessments, coordinating follow-up appointments, facilitating referrals, and supporting treatment orders.
• Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood products, intravenous medications, fluids, injections, specialty infusions, and supportive care medications according to physician orders, treatment protocols, and hospital policies.
• Perform comprehensive patient assessments before, during, and after infusion treatments and document findings in the electronic medical record.
• Monitor patients for adverse reactions, treatment complications, and changes in condition; initiate appropriate interventions and emergency response measures as necessary.
• Educate patients and families regarding cancer diagnoses, infusion therapies, treatment plans, medication administration, side effects, symptom management, and follow-up care.
• Collaborate with oncologists, providers, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate timely and effective patient care.
• Verify treatment orders and collaborate with chemotherapy-certified nursing staff to ensure appropriateness and safety of oncology treatments.
• Perform venipuncture, initiate, maintain, and discontinue peripheral intravenous lines, access implanted ports, and provide central line care according to training, competency, and organizational policy.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, treatments, patient responses, medication administration, and patient education.
• Coordinate scheduling, referrals, treatment timing, and follow-up care to support continuity of services.
• Assist with inventory management, medication coordination, supply monitoring, and maintenance of infusion and oncology treatment resources.
• Adhere to established infection prevention, environmental safety, hazardous drug handling, and regulatory compliance standards.
• Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and participate in emergency preparedness activities.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, competency validation programs, and compliance activities.
• Utilize oncology and infusion nursing resources for clinical consultation, mentorship, educational support, and patient triage concerns as needed.
• Prepare injectable antineoplastic medications in a cleanroom environment when required and appropriately trained.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program.
• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Missouri or eligibility through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Minimum one (1) year of nursing experience; infusion or outpatient experience preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and maintain attention to detail.
• Ability to safely follow infection prevention, medication administration, and hazardous drug handling protocols.
• Proficiency with electronic medical records and other healthcare software applications.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Preferred
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Previous oncology, infusion therapy, emergency department, medical-surgical, or outpatient nursing experience.
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Provider Card or willingness to obtain within 1–3 months of hire.
• Infusion Nursing Certification (CRNI®) or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe.
• Experience with oncology treatment protocols and infusion center operations.
Certification and Competency Requirements
• Maintain current RN licensure and BLS certification.
• Obtain and maintain ONS Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Provider certification as required.
• Complete annual competency validations and ongoing continuing education requirements.
• Renew specialty certifications according to certifying organization requirements.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Ability to perform repetitive hand movements and fine motor tasks.
• Ability to don and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, gowns, eye protection, respirators, and other protective equipment as necessary.
• Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
• Physical demands consistent with registered nursing responsibilities in outpatient clinic and infusion settings.
Work Environment
• Outpatient oncology clinic, ambulatory infusion center, and rural critical access hospital settings.
• Frequent interaction with patients, families, physicians, providers, and interdisciplinary staff.
• Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, hazardous medications, and bodily fluids.
• Daily adherence to OSHA, ONS, and organizational safety standards related to hazardous drug handling and administration.
• May provide care to patients with serious, chronic, or terminal illnesses.
Schedule Expectations
• Primarily day shift hours.
• Occasional weekends, holidays, call responsibilities, or schedule adjustments may be required to support patient care and infusion services.
