CNA/ER Registration Clerk
The essential functions of this position that are listed in this document are not meant to be
all-inclusive. Other duties and responsibilities considered to be within the broad scope
of the position will be assigned as necessary.

Shift is Monday - Thursday, 2:00pm - 11:00pm

CNA ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Perform intake processing (assist presenting patient into ER waiting room if needed; provide a wheelchair
and assist in placing patient in it if appropriate; if arrival is by ambulance, obtain intake paperwork from
ambulance crew and notify RN and/or physician on duty that a patient has arrived, etc.)
2. Assess a presenting patient’s condition and report to attending provider
3. Obtain patient’s name and demographical information to key into EMR system.
4. Use compassionate communication techniques to keep patient and family members calm
5. Report observations to physicians, nurses, or other healthcare facility staff
6. Document any necessary preliminary treatment performed (stemming blood flow, cold compress, etc.)
7. Document any portions of conversations with patient and/or family members that is concerning or relates to
the patient’s health issue and provider determinations regarding appropriate care
8. If patient appears to have an infectious condition, immediately isolate and notify physician and/or nurse
9. Record data collection appropriately and accurately
10. Provide continual patient care in the hospital setting under the supervision of the medical staff if patient is
admitted
11. Complete patient care assignments in a timely and effective manner
12. Recognize and document changes in patient conditions and report to the Charge Nurse (i.e., vital signs,
skin, fluid intake and output, activity level, unusual behavior, etc.)
13. Demonstrate the ability to use all equipment on the unit in a safe, correct, and effective manner
14. Complete required patient observation competencies that require one-on-one monitoring
15. Demonstrates awareness of signs and symptoms of child abuse, elder abuse, spousal abuse, and
possible patient abuse
16. Collect patient specimens according to hospital policies and procedures
17. Willingness to work on other nursing units as appropriate and within scope of training and ability and floats
to those units as assigned

REGISTRATION CLERK ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Ensures that every patient that enters ER doors is treated with courtesy, respect and empathy and is processed appropriately in a timely and efficient manner
2. Uses good judgement to ensure that patients entering with critical health issues are addressed immediately and efficiently
3. Collects and disseminates accurate patient demographic/financial information to internal/external customers and appropriately performs timely documenting into computer system of all transactions.
4. Audits demographic/financial information obtained to improve performance.
5. Answers the multi-line phone systems and directs calls to appropriate extensions.
6. Verifies benefits, eligibility, certification, and authorization, communicating information appropriately; notifies Business Office and patient of any difficulties encountered in the verification process.
7. Informs patient of their portion of their financial responsibility. Collects patient responsibility including co-pays and deductibles at the time of service.

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY:
Accountabilities for this position: 95% registration accuracy; time and attendance accountability; strive for reduced overtime and reduction in supply waste. Meet expected monthly collection goals. Strives for no patient complaints; abides by HIPAA regulations at all times. Internal and external customers include department personnel, vendor’s insurance agencies/personnel, physician/staff, patients and their families.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High school Education or GED with EMT certification;
• Preference give to candidates with 2 years of experience in healthcare and those whose references substantiate excellent customer service skills
• TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
Must be familiar with various computer programs
Medical terminology proficiency strongly preferred
General office equipment

• Ability to deal with and articulate sensitive information to patients, families, and employees
• Ability to use sound logic, judgement, and tact to address sensitive situations

PERFORMANCE AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Performance of assigned duties in a professional, accurate, and courteous manner
2. Must be able to key data at a minimum rate of 60 words per minute
3. Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
4. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
5. Must possess sight, hearing and vocal senses, or use of prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately, so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
6. Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with patients, CCMH personnel, support agencies and facilities, and vendors.
7. Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
8. Must be able to operate office equipment as necessary to ensure smooth workflow.
9. Must be able to speak the English language in an understandable manner.
10. Must be able to write the English language in legible and understandable manner.
11. Physical demands: Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift up to 20 pounds, push and pull, and maintain emotions when dealing with upset and/or irate customers.
