Infection Control/Employee Health & Wound RN
Job Summary
The Infection Control/Employee Health and Wound & Infusion Nurse is a full-time exempt role responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance and evaluation of the hospital’s infection control program, management of the employee health program, and provision of direct patient care in the outpatient wound and infusion clinic. This dual-role position ensures regulatory compliance, staff and patient safety, accurate surveillance and reporting of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and high-quality wound and infusion services in an integrated, patient-centered manner.
Infection Prevention & Control (ICP) Duties:
o Lead and coordinate the facility's Infection Prevention and Control Program.
o Conduct infection surveillance activities to track, analyze, and report infection trends.
o Develop and maintain a system for identifying, investigating, and reporting nosocomial infections.
o Coordinate and chair quarterly Infection Control Committee meetings.
o Develop and deliver education programs and annual in-service training to staff on infection prevention and control practices.
o Monitor and ensure appropriate use of antiseptics, disinfectants, and sterilization processes throughout the facility.
o Serve as a resource during patient admissions/readmissions regarding infection risks.
o Participate in environmental rounds to monitor construction, cleaning, and disinfection practices for compliance.
o Assist in internal audits and quality initiatives related to infection prevention.
o Analyze infection data and collaborate with the QAPI Committee and leadership to identify trends and recommend interventions.
o Ensure continuous, facility-wide infection surveillance is maintained across all departments and shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends, through established monitoring systems, staff reporting, and data review protocols
o Provide around-the-clock infection prevention expertise and support through established protocols, remote availability, and coordination with clinical teams, ensuring timely response to infection-related concerns across all departments and shifts.
o Report specific healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) via the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), including:
Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI)
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)
Surgical site infections (SSI) for specific procedures (e.g., hip prosthesis, abdominal hysterectomy, colon surgery, CABG) 1 2
o Complete and submit the NHSN Annual Hospital Survey and confer access rights to DHSS.
 Ensure timely submission of all required data (within 60 days of the end of the reporting month).
o Participate in the hospital-wide Antibiotic Stewardship Program in collaboration with pharmacy, medical staff, and nursing leadership, ensuring adherence to nationally recognized guidelines and documentation of antibiotic improvements.
o Provide competency-based infection prevention and control training to all hospital personnel, including contracted staff, with documentation of completion and effectiveness.
Employee Health Duties:
o Manage the employee health program, including pre-employment health screening, immunization tracking, TB screening/annual testing as required, and maintenance of confidential occupational health records.
o Maintain and implement the facility Exposure Control Plan consistent with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standard; ensure timely post-exposure evaluation, follow-up and documentation.
o Conduct and document work related health assessments, return to work evaluation, and reasonable accommodation guidance in coordination with HR and the CNO.
o Track occupational exposures, employee illness, work restrictions, and facilitate appropriate medical referrals and follow-up
o Coordinate seasonal and outbreak related employee vaccination campaigns and document declination, exemptions, and administrations per hospital policy.
Outpatient Wound & Infusion Duties:
o Provide direct patient care for outpatient wound management, including initial wound assessment, staged wound care planning, advanced dressing application, debridement as within scope of practice and facility policy, and documentation of wound progress.
o Provide infusion therapy services (IV antibiotics, hydration, biologics, iron infusions, infusions ordered by providers, blood products) including assessment, venous access management, pump programming, monitoring, and emergency response to infusion reactions.
o Perform and document competency-based vascular access assessment and maintenance (PICC care, peripheral IVs, midline awareness) and escalation to provider for complications
o Coordinate care with Specialty Clinic providers (e.g., general surgery, podiatry, vascular) primary care, case management, and home health services to support continuity of care.
o Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record including consent, infusion logs, MAR entries, wound measurement/photographs per hospital policy.
Duality Duties:
o Maintain current knowledge of CDC, OSHA, and state health department guidelines related to infection control.
o Review, update, and maintain policies, procedures, and protocols
o Serve as a member of the nursing leadership team and participate in the nursing leadership on-call rotation, assisting with operational troubleshooting and physical shift coverage in the event of staffing shortages in any nursing area, including but not limited to Med/Surg, Emergency Department, Cardiac Rehab, Wound Care, and Clinics.
o Comply with all regulatory requirements from the state of Missouri and CMS
o Collect, validate, and submit surveillance as an inclusion to the hospital-wide quality initiative
o Develop and monitor key performance indicators for all areas
o Lead or support quality improvement projects focused on infection reduction, wound healing outcomes, infusion safety, and patient experience
o Promote timely communications and education to leadership and staff following the findings from surveillance, audit and outbreak investigations.
Qualifications
o Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and has a current, unencumbered RN license in the State of Missouri or compact state
o Current BLS & ACLS required. Wound certification (WCC, CWCN, or similar) preferred or willing to obtain within 12 months. CIC certification preferred or willing to obtain within 24 months
o Experience developing and presenting staff education programs
o Skilled in data analysis, reporting, and policy interpretation
o Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
o Experience in quality assurance or performance improvement preferred
o Minimum 3 years of nursing experience, with prior infection control, occupational health, wound care, or infusion therapy preferred.
o Strong interpersonal and communication skills
