Parkinson’s Therapy Program Offers Hope, Confidence and Real Results

April 1, 2026 — April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding of Parkinson’s disease and support those living with this progressive neurological condition. Parkinson’s disease affects nearly one million people in the United States, with approximately 90,000 new diagnoses each year. While there is currently no cure, research shows that exercise and targeted physical therapy can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s.

Cedar County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) provides hope for individuals living with Parkinson's disease through its specialized physical therapy program utilizing PWR!Moves, an evidence-based therapeutic approach. PWR stands for Parkinson Wellness Recovery, a nonprofit organization founded in Arizona in 2010 by Dr. Becky G. Farley, Ph.D., MS, PT, who developed Parkinson’s-specific exercises that help maintain and restore skills that have deteriorated and can interfere with everyday movements. CCMH’s program is led by physical therapy assistant Melenna Tabakian. She is PWR! certified and studied under Farley in 2016.

“I love working with my patients using a holistic approach - looking at diet, sleep and exercise,” Tabakian said. “I believe PWR! Helps patients to take back their life and independence, by helping to reduce tremors, improve gait, balance and cognitive retention.”

The program addresses gait and balance through specific targeted activities designed to improve mobility and stability. Rigidity is managed through stretching and soft tissue mobilization techniques that help reduce muscle stiffness. Additionally, cognitive function is supported through multitasking challenges that help patients maintain mental sharpness.

Real Results from Real Patients

Glenn Gilmore of Nevada, MO was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2023 and has been working with Tabakian for a year. "I have seen a vast improvement since starting therapy," Gilmore shared. "It has given me confidence to try new activities. I am able to do my chores at home better now and I feel stronger and more confident."

When asked what advice he would give someone considering the PWR! Program, Gilmore was emphatic: "Just DO IT! You will not regret it! It's worth the drive!"

Gilmore praised the personalized nature of the treatment, noting that having therapy tailored to individual goals makes a meaningful difference in outcomes. He also emphasized the importance of staying active with Parkinson's, explaining that it "keeps you more aware of what you are actually capable of."

What sets CCMH's program apart is the dedication and expertise of its therapeutic team. "The therapists are caring and show true concern. They also communicate with you really well," said Gilmore. "The therapists are always doing their research."

Gilmore also receives Parkinson’s treatment from Neurology Specialist, Molly Davidson, FNP at CCMH and has been pleased with her care as well. For individuals newly diagnosed with Parkinson's, Gilmore offers this encouragement: "Check out CCMH, they give you hope and confidence."
