Pulmonary Rehab for Lung Function Improvement

Chronic Lung Disease

Chronic lung disease can be a serious and debilitating condition. Chronic lung disease is a leading contributor to mortality, morbidity and disability in the United States. Nationally, it affects over 50 million Americans, with millions more who are undiagnosed. People diagnosed with chronic lung disease often can breathe better and live longer, active lives by participating in respiratory care and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Across the country, only about 1600 such pulmonary rehab centers exist and many people with lung conditions do not have access to these lifesaving therapies. Fortunately for Cedar County and surrounding areas, we have a pulmonary rehab center right here at Cedar County Memorial Hospital.

Our program is highly effective and will help you improve your breathing and overall health. Your active participation in our pulmonary rehab will provide you with measurable results - increasing your strength and exercise capacity, reducing shortness of breath, and helping you to lead a more active life.

We will provide you diagnostic testing, therapeutic exercises, educational training and outcomes assessment as part of your treatment. Our therapist will guide you through every step of our program, with the goal of increasing your independence and improving your health and wellbeing.

Typically, you will be scheduled for three appointments per week for 2-3 hours each, for 12 weeks. Your treatment will be evaluated monthly and modified based on your response to the therapies. Attending every scheduled session is important to your success! After completing the program, people are frequently amazed at how much their breathing and exercise capacity have improved.

Studies have shown that mortality is reduced 40% in chronic lung disease when patients initiate pulmonary rehab within 90 days of their hospital discharge.

Medicare and most private insurance companies cover respiratory care and pulmonary rehabilitation services.

SARS-CoV-2

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)represented a global health crises with long-lasting consequences. Though more than 100 million people have recovered from COVID-19 infections, many will have long-term respiratory complications.

There is a growing population of COVID-19 patients with prolonged post-acute symptoms, a syndrome described as "long COVID" that presents with a variety of chronic health issues that include impaired lung function, reduced exercise capacity and diminished quality of life.

Frequently patients continue to have shortness of breath and fatigue months after their initial diagnosis of COVID-19. We can provide the essential diagnostic testing to monitor your lung function.
Our respiratory care and pulmonary rehab program can accelerate the recovery of exercise capacity and pulmonary function status following COVID-19 infections in many patients.
